Former player files: Thomas Sorensen

sorensen.jpgTHERE must be something about the Midlands and former Villa players.

Kevin Phillips, Luke Moore, Scott Carson and now Thomas Sorensen are the latest batch of players to sign out of Villa Park and check straight into one of the club's near rivals.

Quite what sort of season awaits Sorensen at Stoke City is open to debate. He's likely to spend most of it picking leather out of the back of a net whatever happens, but will he be a gallant hero or a scapegoat?

Stoke's been a retirement home for a couple of ex-Villa men lately, albeit on a temporary basis. Lee Hendrie went there and looked like he was about to relaunch his career before being shipped out, while Patrik Berger also won a short-lived Villa reprieve during a spell with the Potters.

But Sorensen may, ultimately, have the luxury of not needing to impress at the Britannia Stadium. He's 32 and entering the twilight years of his career (although new signing Brad Friedel might argue that Sorensen has plenty of years left in him yet).

However there's still a chance for Sorensen to earn himself one last crack at the Premiership with a side who aren't virtually doomed before they even begin.

Produce a couple of inspired displays and clubs may well be looking once more at an experienced keeper with top flight experience. Become the man who gets beaten by four or five every week (Roy Carroll anyone?) and we might soon see Sorensen's star fading into the distance in English football at least.
